Winston “Nasty Time” Anderson (3,0). He fights Saturday night…

Nasty Time Anderson turned pro April 7 2012… He has gone on to have 3 first round KO’s against equally matched opposition.. Even stealing somebodies 0… Anderson has quickly gained in popularity and has become an attraction on boxing cards. Although he has made  quick work in the ring, he has put in major time in the gym sparring with the best he can find. As his trainer Jason Hendrickson likes to say, “go hard in the gym, and fight night is easy”… Below is a quick Q&A with Winston “Nasty Time” Anderson…Follow MNBoxingLeague on facebook and twitter.

Since turning pro a year ago you are (3,0) all by first round stoppage. Your last fight you got to steal an 0. What do you attribute your success?

Nasty….I attribute my success to my family friends and fans… Most definitely my trainer Jason Hendrickson and my management… A lot of hard work goes in from my self and trainer and team we make the two hour trip twice a week and trainer Jason makes it once a week so its a team success to me and it keeps me punching forward and working hard with a great team, family, and fan base behind me….

You have followed RJ Laase in making trips to Uppercut Boxing Gym to get more looks in the the ring, how has seeing all the different styles and the coaching of Jason Hendrickson helped to improve your game and make you a KO force in the ring?

Nasty….Rj is one of the top in the game its been more then helpful having him as a boxing mentor and getting in rounds with him I can keep up with him in the ring when we spar I know my opponents don’t get that kind of work after rounds with him I have the mind set of who can Handel me?… Also I get the different looks from some of the top ams in the game and they come to bang every time, they are just as hungry as any pro I step in the ring with. Its some of the best sparring around, again I know my opponents are not getting that kind of work… Jason and I have gotten off to a great start with each other, he has improved and stepped my boxing talent further then I thought I could ever take it and there is still nothing but time and opportunity. My speed and timing have been improved thanks to coach Jason, my balance is better and he had slowed my feet down to where I actually have them under me to put that knock out power behind my punches. We are still new together but the friendship and training we have created feels like its always been there, we are here and I don’t see my self finishing my career with out him by my side…

You are another with a very busy life, full time job, full time training, and son. How do you keep thing in order and make time for everything important?

Nasty….I just take it day by day I have great support from my family, girlfriend, friends and fans so it makes all the hard work with it. I’m blessed to be in this position at this point in my life. I’m young and healthy, so its not hard to balance the life as a pro, as a boyfriend, a father, and family member. I work hard and everyone appreciates it so it makes me that much more hungry for success and to maintain a balanced life style everything falls into place with hard work dedication and support,,,

What should fans expect to see from Nasty Time this Saturday?

Nasty….Fans should expect to exactly what they know they are coming to see from me nothing, but action, slick boxing, strong fighting, hard punching, and possibly a punch sponsored by NyQuil…

Is there anything you would like to add?

Nasty….Id like to thank T~Rex promotions for getting the fight set up and bringing boxing back to the area. A big thanx to my trainer Jason tough as Shit Hendrickson and my manager Todd Bechthold, also my fans for the support, my girlfriend, my Anderson family, and my mom Keni Anderson I wouldn’t be on this road to success with out her giving birth to “Nasty Time” also don’t blink when Nastyyyyyyyyyy is in the ring you just might miss something…..

Shimmell has been sparring with heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko… Although he has had to stay in southpaw stance, the opportunity to grow is huge…

RDS and SEG will be bring you; Jason Litzau (28,3), Aaron Green (5,0 all early KO’s), Donny Drama and more… Not a ton of information on full card out there, but it is warm in MN and boxing can take a back seat to fishing, golfing and summer fun… Update: Quote from Jason Litzau’s FB wall… “My opponent has changed, the result will be the same. Two opponents have pulled out, but, a brave mexican has accepted the challenge. I will be fighting him at a higher weight class just to get him to come.

The fight is this Saturday. I will not let happen what happened to Manny Pacquiao. I will not leave it to the judges.

Please buy your tickets from me. I need them for my purse. Please call Bob Van Syckle 732-489-3631 or Eddie Drury 651-353-9001.

Thanks and see you Saturday night at the Hyatt in Minneapolis.”

June 23 will bring more pro boxing action as Cerresso Fort and Dave Peterson go at it in what should be a very fun fight. Fort feels he is ready for the states best, Caleb Truax and Andy Kolle. Peterson’s team has always considered Dave one of the state’s elite fighters. This will be power vs sweet science in most peoples eyes. Can Peterson withstand Fort’s size and power advantage early on? Will Fort make 154 and still have the energy and power to deal with Dave’s slickness? Big fan of both of these guys and can see ways each can win….

T-Rex Promotions plans on bringing some summer fun to the twin ports July 21… This show will feature local favorite RJ “T-Rex” Laase in the main event. The local flavor will continue throughout the night with; Winston Anderson (Cloquet), Joe Lorenzi (Duluth, also owner of Lorenzi’s Boxing in West Duluth), Randy Ronchi (Superior) vs Andrew Selvig (Somebodies 0 must go), Selvig and Ronchi have fought each other in the cage with Ronchi getting the win, and the fight getting fight of the night. Both these guys will come in swinging, very fan friendly fight! Tyler Hultin always brings the action and western MN, Plus much more… …Matchmaker Andy Kolle should have a full line-up soon….

Notes from around the region’s pro boxing scene…

Dustin "Bull Dog" Mason, photo courtesy Ben Smolnikar

Dustin “Bull Dog” Mason’s broken right hand puts a pretty big damper on a couple upcoming cards. He was set to fight Brad Patraw (7,4) June 16 and depending on how that fight went would have been making a pretty big step up in competition and fighting in the co main July 21. Team Bull Dog is sick about his injury and is thankful to RDS, Brad Patraw, and T-Rex Promotions for the opportunities they had set for him and wants his fans to know he will get the right procedures done and come back stronger than ever and ready for even bigger fights….

MinnesotaBoxing.com is reporting that Jason Litzau (28,3) is in New Jersey preparing for his return to action at the Hyatt in Minneapolis MN June 16 (RDS Promotions). Litzau is set to fight Leon Bobo in the main event….

Word is both Cerresso Fort and Dave Peterson are training harder than ever for their showdown June 23 (Draw Events, Jungle Boy Boxing). Worries about Fort making weight are fading as he is looking leaner than ever….. There is still no opponent named for Al Sands….

T-Rex Promotions plan to start announcing fights next week for their July 21 show at Wessman Arena. RJ “T-Rex” Laase (8,1) and team plan on taking their biggest step-up to date in the main event. Tyler Hultin, Winston Anderson, and Joe Lorenzi have all verbally committed to this card. Should be another full house for great fights….

Q & A with Jason Hendrickson, Trainer to some of the Midwest’s top pros and amateurs….

Jason Hendrickson has worked with professional boxers; Andy “Kaos” Kolle (25,3), RJ “T-Rex” Laase (8,1), Winston Anderson (1,0) and others. He also trains several amateurs out of Uppercut Boxing Gym in Minneapolis. Below is a Q & A we had with Jason about himself and the regions boxing scene….

RJ Laase, left, with trainer Jason Hendrickson

What first sparked your passion for boxing?

I’ve always been a boxing fan.  After I graduated from college I got fat and I found a boxing gym in Wadena, MN which was close to me at the time.  I went there and after my first day of training I was as sore  as I’ve ever been in my life.  A couple weeks later I starting sparring and this kid Frank Orsello laid a brutal beating on me.  My competitive nature took over and all I could think about day and night was what happened in the ring with Frank and making sure it didn’t happen again.  Boxing puts you in tough situations and the way a person responds to those situations is what makes them fail or succeed.  That’s what made me fall in love with boxing.

How long have you been active in boxing? And when did you start coaching?

I started fighting 8 years ago.  I started training fighters 4 years ago.  When my wife and I were expecting our first child I knew it would be difficult to put the same amount of time into getting myself prepared to fight.  I love the gym and couldn’t stay away so I started helping with some of the kids in Uppercut’s teen program and took off from there.

This being your first year involved in cornering professional fighters, what have you learned? And what do you feel you bring to the table?

You never stop learning in boxing and I’ve learned a lot over the last year about the professional side of the sport.  It’s definitely not a place for the faint of heart.  One of the main things I try to remind the fighters I work with is that we all do this because we enjoy it so I do what I can to try and make sure that we get the most out of every day we’re in the gym and have fun doing it.

How do you see the overall landscape of boxing in Minnesota, both professionally and in the amateurs?
Minnesota has had a bad run of late on the National level.  I do think there are a lot of promising young fighters that can change this over time but it’s not going to happen overnight.  I loved seeing Caleb prepare for his fight by going to many different gyms and working with the best fighters around.  The Minnesota boxing community is small so this is the type of approach I think we are going to need to take if this is going to change.

If you were talking to somebody about boxing in this state, who would you tell them to watch for?

The first thing I’d do is tell them about all the fighters I work with.  The other names I would bring up are Caleb Truax, Aaron Green, Robert Brant, Ismail Muwendo and Manny Contreras.  Most of these guys are just starting out as professionals and they are all stand up guys.  If you’re a fight fan in Minnesota I think the next few years will be fun getting to know these guys and following them as they go through the rest of their careers.

You and RJ “T-Rex” Laase have built quite a trainer/fighter bond.  Why do you think you and he click so well? What has helped in building this new improved T-Rex?

The first time I held pads for RJ I left the gym thinking man this dude has fast hands and can really crack.  The main thing we’ve worked on is his balance and making sure he is in a position to land a punch at all times.  I think the progression RJ has made is really in the way he is setting up his shots and taking what’s open rather than always going for that big punch the opponent can see coming.  One thing is for sure if RJ hits you clean on the chin you’re going to be put to sleep.  During our first camp I told him that there is an Ali quote that sums up my philosophy on getting ready for fights.  “The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses – behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.”  We are on the same page with this and know it’s not always going to be rainbows and butterflies in the gym getting ready for a fight.  This approach allows us to communicate during those rough times and figure things out together so that he is ready to shine when the lights are on and the T-Rex fans are going crazy.  We don’t do things his way and we don’t do things my way.  We talk about things, figure it out together and do things our way.

You are known for stepping in the ring and banging with the guys you train, are there things you feel you can better teach by actually being a part of the action? Is it just the fighter inside you that wants to hit and be hit? I think it adds a greater respect level, does that play in to things?

I’m a trainer first and I feel I can see things better and coach better from outside the ring.  I also feel that people learn best by doing so I want the fighters sparring as much as possible.  If there isn’t any sparring available I’ll gear up and give them work.  As soon as that bell rings I become a fighter and no longer a trainer.  I’m not in there to play patty cakes and expect the same in return.  Training and getting ready for fights together does build a sense of camaraderie and for this next training camp I’ll be a trainer first but doing all the strength and conditioning work with the fighters for a fight of my own in August.

How important do you think it is for a fighter to travel and change up sparring and scenery?

I don’t think the traveling and scenery change is what is important.  What is important is to constantly be challenged in sparring and to be in with the best fighters available.  That often means traveling to get that sparring.  “What got you here won’t get you where you want to go” is something I’ve always told fighters as a reminder to keep pushing forward and challenging them.

Minnesota’s Caleb Truax was the latest from the region to hit the big stage as a professional, losing a UD to Jermain Taylor. He had the whole state jumping from their seats in the 9th by putting Taylor down. What was your over-all assessment of the fight?

I’m a big fan of Caleb and his trainer Tom Halsted.  They do things the right way.  In that fight Caleb was just a bit hesitant early in the fight which is to be expected for his first time on the big stage.  I think that fight was great experience for Caleb and that he will be back fighting in big fights soon.

There are three professional boxing cards coming up near to home, two in June and one in July.

It’s great to see all these fights taking place.  They feature some great boxer vs. puncher matchups that should be very entertaining.  I hope the fans come to support them all and that the boxing scene continues to grow locally.

From your perspective, what can the upper midwest’s boxing scene do to increase interest from the average sports fan?

Being good at boxing and having great fights isn’t enough to sell tickets and grow the sport.  Everyone involved in the sport needs to constantly be thinking of new ways to market the fighters and events to get the word out about the strong local scene we have here.  I think if people got to know some of the stories behind these fighters and the fights that boxing will grow.  RJ got off to a great start with the way he promoted his first card and I hope things only get better from there.

You train fighters primarily out of Uppercut Boxing Gym, ( I love this place, huge space, two rings, all kinds of bags, great ownership, and lots of help). What brought you to uppercut? And why would you recommend this gym to fighters of all levels?

Uppercut is like home for me and my family.  I actually met my wife there during a sparring session.  She also trains fighters out of there so you can find us there basically every day of the week.  I started training there because it was closest to where I work but from the first day I knew it was the right place for me.  I don’t think you’ll find many other places where people with more diverse backgrounds all come together for the same reason.  Uppercut Gym is a great place I and would recommend it to anyone.

Any final thoughts?
Thanks for taking the time for this interview and I hope to see everyone at an upcoming local boxing show!!!

RDS Promotion’s main is set for June 16…Notes on upcoming shows…

Jason Litzau (28-3) vs Leon Bobo (18-9-1) will headline June 16th’s show at the Hyatt in Minneapolis….. This will be Jason’s first home fight in several years….The show looks to be complete and a good one… Green/Gibson, Patraw/Mason also featured.

Dustin "Bull Dog" Mason, photo courtesy Ben Smolnikar

June 23

Cerresso Fort (12,0,1) vs Dave Peterson (13,0) will headline this show to be held at Black Bear Casino. Draw Events and Jungle Boy Boxing’s first stab at promoting pro boxing brings a nice main. The Fort/Peterson fight will be an 8 rounder. They have added rounds to all their fights now and it looks like Al Sands will be stepping up to a 6 rounder but no opponent named yet. I commend Draw Events, for in the end deciding to go with an ABC member commission.

July 21

T-Rex Promotions with MNBoxingLeague.com will be putting on another show at Wessman Arena in Superior WI. RJ “T-Rex” Laase will be headlining the card in his stiffest fight to date. Tyler ” Hit Man” Hultin, Dustin “Bull Dog” Mason (Mason has business to take care of June 16 first), and  Winston Anderson will all be featured along with several more exciting fights. Andy “Kaos” Kolle will be heavily involved in the business side of this show while his broken left hand is healing….

Love Boxing? April, May, June, July, Lots to love!

NOTES:

Boxing has not been this hot in the upper midwest for years. Tomorrow night brings what Minnesota fight fans have been waiting a long time for, a very winnable and competitive nationally televised fight. Caleb “Golden” Truax (18,0,1) gets his chance to shine in the bright lights against a man in Jermain Taylor who many think is a shadow of his former world class self. Now I don’t know about all of that, Taylor will be tough and he and his team look at this fight as just another step back to where they feel they rightly belong, in talks of title fights…. Most know my pick on this one, but I will save that for tomorrow along with a few last quotes from Truax…. weigh photos and weights from fightnews.com

RJ "T-Rex" Laase (8,1) sport The League T

April 7 in the twin ports brought out close to 1500 fans to see local favorites Andy “Kaos” Kolle (25,3), RJ “T-Rex” Laase (8,1) and T-Rex Promotions debut show. And the beautiful part is, as one of Minnesota’s premier match makers put it, Cory Rapacz, “the show was the best over all show put on in northern MN in years.” From production to action it will be hard to beat that total package.

RDS and Cory Rapacz have a great show of their own scheduled for May 12 at the Hyatt in Minneapolis MN. The Main event is reason enough to get out to this one. Wilton Hilario and Jeremy McLaurin fight it out for super featherweight supremacy. The much talked about and long awaited debut of one of the nation’s best amateur fighters Robert Brant has boxing people buzzing. Most observers seem to think he will translate his immense amateur success into Professional stardom, but one fight at a time, lol… Also fighting will be Aaron “Gorilla” Green (5,0), the bad blood match between “Bad” Brad Patraw (7,4) and Dustin “Bull Dog” Mason (3,0), Donny Drama and Tony Lee in separate bouts…

June could bring up to 3 professional boxing cards to the three state area of MN, WI, and ND. It looks like 2 of the shows will be June 23, one at Black Bear Casino featuring Dave Peterson (13,0) vs Cerresso Fort (12,0,1), also featuring Al Sands (2,1). The other looks to be in the twin cities and possibly having Winston Anderson and RJ Laase fighting. There is yet another rumored card, but that is all I know of it. This is boxing so all you see on June could change by May.

T-Rex Promotions looks to get back in action in July/August as well as a brand new promoter. Good times indeed….
