Joey “The Don” Lorenzi…. Next stop Wessman Arena… Saturday Night…

Tonight Joey “The Don” Lorenzi is fighting for the second time on his comeback. This past September The Don fought for the first time since 2007.. His record is (1,5,1) with his first win coming in his last fight. A look at Lorenzi’s boxrec shows he has not back down from anyone.. Several local matchmakers have called him the best (1,5) in the country… He was always brought in as an opponent and many think he got the opponent treatment on a few of those score cards… Joe Lorenzi is now focused on the future and what marks he can make going forward. He stands (1,0) in his boxing rebirth and his passion and fire have come full circle… The owner of Lorenzi’s boxing in Duluth, Joe remembers his roots and those who taught him valuable boxing and life lessons. Check out Joe’s gym and you can see the joy he gives and gains by working with kids and teaching them all the good that can come from hard work, not just in the ring, but in life… Never give up… Below is a Q & A with Lorenzi…Follow MNBoxingLeague on facebook and twitter.

This will be your first fight since September 15, how have you been able to keep focus?

Lorenzi….I took some time off to get married and then hit the gym up again in November. I had a few fights that fell off from then till now but my last fight sparked my passion for the sport again. It was a long time coming.

Your gym “Lorenzi’s Boxing” has become the choice of most local pros and always seems to be packed. I know that is not your only job. How do you shuffle work, the gym, family, and training as a pro boxer?

Lorenzi….It’s not easy but first I have an amazing, loving, and understanding wife. That and I have been able get some great people at the gym that believe in what I feel is the bigger picture. The kids! I love working with the kids and young adults in the area. To be able to give back has been something I’ve always wanted to do. The team at the gym feels the same way.

You have been working your way to your natural weight of light heavy 175, how has that journey been going and is that where you would like to fight going forward?

Lorenzi…It’s been tough. I’ve been working hard, the weight is coming down but it hasn’t been easy! I have had to change my life and the way I think about food, work ethic and surround myself with with Dietitians and personal trainers. But I feel great! My definition of hunger has changed a few different times since I’ve started!

What goals have you and your team set for your boxing career?

Lorenzi….I’d like to see my self at 175 comfortably and down the road possibly fight for the 175 LB belt. It’s a longer path then I would have imagined 10
years ago but getting there will be fulfilling to say the least!

The twin ports has a rich boxing history going back for years. It seems like gyms such as your and Twin Ports Boxing gym work hard to keep alive all that those early on have achieved. Do you make an effort to keep people from the beginning involved? And what is your connection with Twin Ports boxing?

Lorenzi….I came from Twin Ports Boxing. That’s where it all started for me. I learned from a great stable of fighters! Guys like Wayne Putnam, Tim McShane, Danny Radlof to name a few. I can remember one of my first coaches Jesus Roses teaching me how
to jab and how to stand. Don Jasper showing how to be fierce on the bag! One coach who has stayed with me from my first fight till now (70 am and 7 pro) is Aaron Resberg! You might not always agree with him but he is a great coach. My coach! I might be wearing a LB t-shirt when you see me but underneath it all it says TPB! That’s we’re my heart will always be!

You are fighting a (1,0) boxer, what should fans expect from this fight?

Lorenzi….The fans should expect just that a fight! He doesn’t want to lose! I don’t want to lose! But sorry, this is my home, my time and I haven’t put in all this hard work to walk away empty handed! I have fought some tough guys along the way. I’m not a lay down fighter and I’m here to show everybody don’t think just cause my record says 1-5-1 that that’s who I am! I’m a fighter and I am coming to show where hard work and dedication gets you!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Lorenzi….I want to thank my wife and my family, Todd Bechthold, Rj Laase and T-Rex Promotions for giving me a chance to shine! My coaches at Twin Ports boxing Aaron, Tim and Mickey, all my gym members and coaches and my fans! Thank you all! Ill see you at the fights!

Next Saturday, June 16, Boxing is back in Minneapolis MN. RDS and SEG will be bring you; Jason Litzau (28,3), Aaron Green (5,0 all early KO’s), Donny Drama and more… Not a ton of information on full card out there, but it is warm in MN and boxing can take a back seat to fishing, golfing and summer fun… Update: Quote from Jason Litzau’s FB wall… “My opponent has changed, the result will be the same. Two opponents have pulled out, but, a brave mexican has accepted the challenge. I will be fighting him at a higher weight class just to get him to come.

The fight is this Saturday. I will not let happen what happened to Manny Pacquiao. I will not leave it to the judges.

Please buy your tickets from me. I need them for my purse. Please call Bob Van Syckle 732-489-3631 or Eddie Drury 651-353-9001.

Thanks and see you Saturday night at the Hyatt in Minneapolis.”

June 23 will bring more pro boxing action as Cerresso Fort and Dave Peterson go at it in what should be a very fun fight. Fort feels he is ready for the states best, Caleb Truax and Andy Kolle. Peterson’s team has always considered Dave one of the state’s elite fighters. This will be power vs sweet science in most peoples eyes. Can Peterson withstand Fort’s size and power advantage early on? Will Fort make 154 and still have the energy and power to deal with Dave’s slickness? Big fan of both of these guys and can see ways each can win….

T-Rex Promotions plans on bringing some summer fun to the twin ports July 21… This show will feature local favorite RJ “T-Rex” Laase in the main event. The local flavor will continue throughout the night with; Winston Anderson (Cloquet), Joe Lorenzi (Duluth, also owner of Lorenzi’s Boxing in West Duluth), Randy Ronchi (Superior) vs Andrew Selvig (Somebodies 0 must go), Selvig and Ronchi have fought each other in the cage with Ronchi getting the win, and the fight getting fight of the night. Both these guys will come in swinging, very fan friendly fight! Tyler Hultin always brings the action and western MN, Plus much more… …Matchmaker Andy Kolle should have a full line-up soon….
