Fight of the night? Dec. 4 at The Target Center is loaded with possibilities.

People are taking notice of this fun card because of all the heavyweight fireworks that should happen. Joey Abell (25,4) vs Raphael Butler (34,8) is sure to please. But the undercard is also loaded with well matched fights that could steal the show. We will be going through some of these match-ups throughout this week leading up to Friday night’s fireworks. We also plan to have some interviews with the contestants of this highly anticipated event. (We had an interview lined up with Zach Walters by Laura Zink, but Walters decided he wanted his actions in the ring to do the talking.) Below is one of the fights that could steal the show.

Gary “Stone Cold” Eyer (6,0,1) is looking to silence some of his critics. While having an undefeated record there are those that have said he has not fought anybody yet. His biggest wins have come against Scott Robinson, he did that in back to back fights. Eyer has not yet faced and opponent with a winning record, this Friday he gets his chance against fellow undeated fighter, Levi Cortes (3,0). For Cortes’s part, he has faced the stiffer of competition in his three fights.

I have had the pleasure of watching most of Eyer’s fights while only catching Levi Cortes’s most recent bout. What I have been told and saw for myself about Cortes, is that he is one tough customer. The time I did see Levi in action, he was non stop in your face and throwing with bad intentions on almost every exchange. After that fight I turned to Laura Zink and told her I cant wait to see this guy again. December 4th I get my wish, and its against another fighter that is must see for me.

Gary Eyer has more slickness to his game than his opponent, but is not afraid to stand in front and pick his guy apart. Eyer has some of the sweetest chopping body shots in the state and I think they will be on full display on Minnesota’s greatest stage. The styles of these two combatants make for sure entertainment in the ring when they square off. Look for Cortes to be on the attack from start to finish while Eyer uses his superior boxing skills to get angles and chop down his attacking foe. This is my pick to be fight of the night, don’t be surprised to see 6 full rounds of action.

Minnesota’s Boxing

boxThank you for your support! Our readership has hit a new high over the last two months. This last week was our best ever! The holiday weekend has been a time to decompress after all the happens of the last couple weeks. We have some exciting changes coming over the next few weeks and months and I just want to thank you for your continued support. Now back to the reason you’re here in the first place, BOXING. Below are some punches in bunches from around the state.

Gary “Stone Cold” Eyer was in great spirits after his second TKO of Scott Robinson. Gary again told me how scared he was going into the ring, but those who were there or have watched the web-cast know Eyer was more scary than scared.

I had an opportunity to talk with “T-Rex” RJ Laase Saturday. He gave credit to Hecotor Orozco for coming to Duluth and taking care of business. RJ is a very smart young boxer and understands the opportunity this gives him to learn from Thursday nights action. I have no doubt the next time we see Laase, he will be better than ever.

Tyler Hultin lived up to the talk. You really could not ask for a better start to a professional career than an early knock out. I was able to chat with Tyler after his fight Thursday night. First off, Tyler, his dad, his fans, were all class. This is another talented and classy fighter from Fergus Falls MN. He was in great spirits after his fight with Craig, he said he was really looking forward to being able to fight in Duluth again.

Scott Robinson Interview, happy to get another shot at Eyer.

After Gary Eyer got a first round TKO over Scott Robinson back in March, there were some who thought the fight was stopped too early. Scott Robinson is one of the people who thought he wasn’t given a chance to fight on. May 21, marks the day Scott  gets shot number 2. I was able to ask Robinson a few questions regarding their last fight as well as his thoughts on getting another chance.

M…. There were some who thought your last fight with Gary Eyer was stopped too early. What are your thoughts on the subject?

Scott…. “Yes I believed that Mark Nelson stopped it too early, I wasn’t hurt  the second time at all, but whats done is done.”

M…. How do you feel about getting this second chance?

Scott…. “I’m glad that I’m getting another chance, I just hope that the referee lets us fight a little bit, we are pros and people pay good money to see good fights not to let the ref decide the outcome. I do understand Mark’s in there for safety too, but come on now, I’m just coming in there hoping to be a spoiler in Gary’s home town.

M…. Was there any bad blood between Gary and you because of your last fight?

Scott….  ”No there is no bad blood, I respect Gary and have no problem with him at all. He’s a good young fighter on the move up the ladder, but I want to be that guy that gives him his first loss.

M…. Is there anything you will do different this time?

Scott…. “I will be smarter in this fight. Now I know a little bit about him.

M….  Is there anything you would like to add?

Scott…. ” I’m gonna come and fight my ass off. Win or lose, this will be my very last fight, I owe that to my own fighters and my family. I’m getting too old to keep training and doing this.”

Here is our last interview with Mr. Robinson. 3-17-09 Scott Robinson

I would like to thank Scott for taking the time to answer some of our questions.

Gary “Stone Cold” Eyer, post fight interview

Eyer over Robinson by way of 1rst round TKO

As is usually the case, Gary Eyer was humble and not really wanting to talk about himself when approached to do a post fight interview. His first comments were about being scared going into the ring, he mentioned even having a little accident in his trunks on the approach to the ring. Gary was in good spirits after his first round TKO of Scott Robinson, although he did mention his anger and disbelief that they got his song wrong. He most definitely wanted the Boy George version played. He did look angry in his short fight. I started off the questioning by asking about his body work. Our conversation goes as follows.

Did you see openings to the body?

Gary…. “Yeah”

Did you see or make the openings?

Gary…. “Maybe a little of both. I know that if you jab somebody in the head and come down with a 4 to the gut its always going to be there. Its a really good move.”

So you were going to throw those body shots whether there was an opening or not?

Gary…. “I knew I was going to throw a lot of body shots. Jabs to the head and 4 to the body, jab to the head and 2 to the body. I knew I was going to do some liver shots.”

Could you tell the effects your body work was having?

Gary…. “I hit him really good with a right to the body that I knew was good. I know I hit him really good with a 2 to the head to start his fall.”

You look really clean. Did he land anything on you that hurt?

Gary…. “No he didn’t. We wore smaller gloves than I have ever felt, smaller than at the gym. He got me with a good left hook, I just brushed it off. I had my hand down, so I mean, I asked for it. I caught a lot of his punches with my arm.”

Did you have any idea it was going to end that quickly?

Gary…. “I was ready to go all 6 rounds.”

Did you think it was going to?

Gary…. “No, I was pretty sure this fight was going to get stopped. Either me or him.”

Gary also shared what a nice guy he thought Scott Robinson was. Telling me that he hoped to have some of his amatuers work out with some of Scott’s amateurs. Eyer also hopes Scott keeps fighting. I’d like to thank Gary for giving us a little time right after his victory.

” My guess is that Todd peed a little in his pants when approaching Gary for this interview.” Bear

Hinckley Grand Casino and the Midwest Sports Council put on an event to remember. Not only were the fans treated to a changing of the guard in the middleweight division, Andy Kolle’s TKO of Anthony Bonsante,  they were witness to Minnesota boxing at its best. A couple future stars shined in Gary Eyer and Cerresso Fort. I live and report out of Duluth Minnesota, so Eyer’s and Kolle’s performances are strongly etched in my brain, but Fort and Joshua Rodriguez probably had the most entertaining fight of the evening. My oh my, how I love Minnesota boxing. Below is my fight by fight report. Winners are in bold.

Patrick Cape (KO round 3) over Daniel Schlienz – You could tell from the start that these two fighters were also teammates. Cape came in on one days notice because Tyler Gould could not make it out of Fargo ND due to flooding. Cape was the aggressor for most of this bout. Cape seemed to be able to land his overhand right at will, bloodying Daniels nose in the first round. The second round was pretty much the same, but Shlienz seemed to come alive towards the end. By the third round, the one day’s notice seemed to be showing on Cape until he landed a huge right hook that ended the fight.

Gary Eyer (TKO round 1) over Scott Robinson – Scott started this fight the aggressor, feeling Gary out with his jab. Then Gary began his snapping hooks to Scott’s body. Robinson hit the canvas but showed tremendous courage in continuing his charge towards Eyer. This courage was met with more body blows sending Scott to the mat again, the fight being called by the ref after. The headline for this bout would be ” Gary to the body”.

Cerresso Fort (TKO round 4) over Joshua Rodriguez – Fort entered the ring to his very own rap tune. This fight was high action and courage from start to finish. Fort seemed to be landing heavy shots and monster combinations at will.  He was always a hair quicker to the punch. The speed in which Fort threw his combos was truly impressive.  I cannot say enough about  the toughness Rodriguez displayed in continuing to bring the fight back at Cerresso.  However, Joshua could not get his punches off fast enough. Rodriguez was knocked to the ropes in the 4th round by a lightning fast flurry of punches from Fort. Usually when I see punches in bunches like Fort was throwing I don’t see the power that Cerresso was able to sustain with those quick combos. Mercifully the ref stopped the fight when Joshua got to his feet.  For those that are lovers of the jab, this was not the fight for you. For those who love non stop action, much joy was had.

Brad Patraw (UD 60-54, 59-55, 59-55) over Antwan Robertson – While Antwan seemed to be the slicker boxer, this fight was all Patraw. To start the fight, Antwan seemed content to test his defense and quickness, unfortunately for him, he continued that approach for pretty much the whole fight. Brad was slinging shots at Antwan from opening bell through fights end. I’m sorry I don’t have more to write about this fight, but it was pretty much Patraw chasing Robertson around the ring, landing punches on occasion.

Andy Kolle (TKO round 3) over Anthony Bonsante – This is what boxing is all about. Fans were chanting, “Kolle, Kolle” and heard “Bullet, Bullet” in response. The crowd was electric and you could feel all of the emotion and anticipation in the air. Andy “Kaos” Kolle fans were happy to see “Pimp” James bringing out Kaos for this event. The fans were vocal for each fighter’s presentation. Round 1 started out with the usual feeling out process. Kolle was using his jab to keep Bonsante at distance. The Bullet seemed a little tentative until the end of the round when he threw some meaningful punches. I had round 1 as Kolle’s. Round 2 started with Bonsante throwing serious power at every portion of Kolle, body shots, hooks, straight rights, many of which landed. As the round progressed Kolle was able to keep Bonsante at bay using his jab and straight left. Kolle also landed a couple big hooks to the Bullet’s head. This was a close round.  I could see it being scored for either fighter, but I had it going to Kolle. Round 3 started again with Tony on the attack. Bonsante landed a big 1-2-3 combo, all with big power. This barrage of power shots had Kaos retreating. When Kolle was able to gain control of the action he landed a big left to Tony’s head, but the Bullet waved his hand calling Andy to continue the pressure, that’s just what Kaos did. A monster straight left hit Bonsante on the button, sending him to the canvas. The bullet popped up at the count of 8 but told the ref two times that he was not ready to continue. The fight was stopped after Tony showed no interest in taking more shots from Kolle. In a show of tremendous class, Bonsante took the microphone after the fight to congratulate Andy Kolle on becoming the new Minnesota middleweight champion. He also stated that if he had to lose the fight and belt, Kolle was the man he would want it to be against. Andy Kolle was also very gracious and classy in his comments after the fight. Andy stated that he would like to begin fighting at 154 lbs, saying getting to 160 lbs was no longer a challenge to him.

The biggest winners of the night were the fans. What a show. Team Horton came away 2 for 2, as did Rice Street Gym. Enough cannot be said of how good this event was for boxing in this state.  Although attendence numbers varied, I can tell you, I have not seen that many fight fans at a boxing event in Hinckley before last night. It was great to see all of the professional boxers in attendance:  Zach Walters, Phil Williams, Jason and Allen Litzua, Caleb Truax, Willshaun Boxley, RJ Lasse, to just name a few. Seconds Out Promotions was there in support of this event as well. Our hats go off to all the fighters along with Hinckley Grand Casino and the Midwest Sports Council for giving us this show.

I would like to apologize for not having more up this week. Dean Miller, my wife’s brother, a wonderful man with a heart of gold, had his physical heart go out on him at the far too young age of 46. Please keep our family in your prayers.

Below are some of the articles and pieces we had done prior, about this weekends event.

Gary “Stone Cold” Eyer, Interview, Eyer vs Robinson March 28, Hinckley

What can I say about Gary “Stone Cold” Eyer? He has been quite the man of mystery. I have been working on getting an interview with this professional boxer and amateur boxing coach for as long as this site has been around. My experience with Gary has been different than with any other pro boxer I have encountered. He has been reluctant to go on the record with me up to this point, but almost every time I go to Horton’s gym he has offered to teach me a lesson in sparring him. That has never looked like a promising trade off to me. I have seen Stone Cold throw punches, and yes, I do have plenty of padding in my gut region, but I prefer to not have my jello belly pounded like a heavy bag. Now I am happy to say, I was able to get an interview with Gary without having  to sustain a single body blow. Our conversation goes as follows.

6_9boxingfora11

M…. “When did you start boxing?”

Gary…. “I started boxing when I was 15, and in the 8th grade.”

M…. “How did you pick up the nickname, (Stone Cold)?”

Gary…. “I’m not too sure when it came to be. There were some road trips the team went on. When we went to Iceland and Sturgis (the south dakota bike rally), comments were made about my face, like people not knowing what I’m thinking because I always had a blank face. You can’t read my face. So there you have it –Stone Cold.

M…. “In my opinion, you have the greatest ring music of all time. How did that come about?”

Gary…. “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me intro came by the guys messing around, saying they will give someone 100 bucks if they came out to that song. Because, lets face it, that song is the most wimpy song out there. An intro where someone wants to do more than hurt you, but I don’t mess around and I did it for free. With that song, I’m daring the people I fight to knock me out. Since it has not happened yet, can it be that I have a thick neck and my skull is thicker then normal? I swear it is. But what the heck, I like making people laugh and its stuck ever since.”

M…. “Were there any pros you looked up to as you were learning?”

Gary…. “Yeah, I looked up to some pros as a kid. I won’t say their names because I’ve changed my mind on them now that I’m older and wiser. I look up to fighters that are like me in some way, like Rocky Marciano, Jack Dempsey, Ricky Hatton, and Kelly Pavlik to name a few.”

M…. “How do you think training with pros like Zach Walters and Andy Kolle have helped you hone your craft?”

Gary…. “Training with Zach and Andy is huge, it has helped out more then I could say. They opened the door for me, plus they really test my lungs when its time to spar. You know, training with our amateurs is also helpful. I could go on forever about this one.”

M…. “Do you know much about Scott Robinson?”

Gary…. “I just met Scott down in the cities, at the region one tourney. He is my height, but he is way older. He is an old man. He is probably real tough and stuff but the old guy does not know what he is getting himself into.  I think he is a good coach, the way I saw him with his amateurs.”

M…. “What can we expect to see from you on March 28?”

Gary…. “His chances are bad. You can expect a little shake and bake from me, (from the movie ricky bobby). I’m just gonna do the best I can. I want my fight to be the fight of the night. I’ll give everything for that.”

M…. “How many fights would you like to have this year?”

Gary…. “I’d like to fight at least 4 times this year, but no more then 6. I really plan on getting fat after this fight. I got my sweet tooth on.”

I would like to thank Gary “Stone Cold” Eyer for taking the time to answer some of our questions. I really enjoy watching Gary work in the gym. He really has a way with his amateurs. But it should not be forgotten that Gary is a professional boxer who has not lost a pro fight. I am really looking forward to seeing Eyer in action next Saturday.

Scott Robinson Interview, Gary Eyer vs Scott Robinson March 28

I have to admit that I did not know much about Scott Robinson before this interview. Bear thought it would be a good idea to check in with him and share with you. For once Bear had a reasonable thought. My interview with Scott goes as follows.

M…. “When did you start boxing?”

Scott…. “I first started boxing in 1982, when i was 10.”

M…. “Did you do a lot of amateur boxing?”

Scott…. “Well, I Fought amateurs till I was 19 years old, went to every national tournament they had. I had about 180 amateur fights, winning about 150 of them. I got to semifinals in the golden gloves nationals in 1989, under the training of Bill Kahean and Jesse Garza.”

M…. “Do you also train boxers?”

Scott…. “I do train other fighters, I have about 8 amateurs, and I train Harley Kilfian.”

M…. “Where do you and your boxers train out of?”

Scott…. “I train my fighters in Eau Claire Wisconsin”

M…. “Who is your trainer?”

Scott…. “I basically train myself, but i go up to the uppercut gym to get sparring. I worked with Antwon Robertson and Cassy Klugg ,who are both on that show on the 28. Jesse Garza works my corner when i fight.

M…. “What is the reason for some of the long layoffs in between fights, and what keeps you coming back?”

Scott…. “When i was younger I couldn’t get fights in MN, I wasn’t from there and nobody knew me. I was fighting at 119,  there wasn’t much for fighters in the Midwest. I had two fights in Canada against the same guy that I really thought I won. I got sick of the politics of it and ended up quiting for 10 years and moved back to Wisconsin and opened up my gym. I started working out with my fighters and felt I could still compete at that level if I trained right. The reason I keep coming back is its in my blood, I love to fight and when people tell me I’m to old, that gives me more motivation to train harder then ever. And I’m smarter now.”

M…. “What do you enjoy more, boxing or training?”

Scott…. “I enjoy both. The training keeps me in shape and young. I love training my fighters and showing them all that I have learned through the years.”

M…. “How much do you know about Gary Eyer?”

Scott…. “I don’t know much about Gary at all, just that he’s a boxer and hasn’t been beat yet, until the 28th. I’m coming to fight hard.”

M…. “What can fans expect to see in your fight with Eyer?”

Scott…. “Fans can to expect a good fight. I’m a boxer puncher, so expect a hell of a fight.”

M…. “You will be in Harley Kilfian’s corner this coming weekend, does that make it hard on your training for Gary Eyer?”

Scott….  ”No, not at all. It gives me motivation, cause when Harley wins, then its my turn next.”

M…. “Harley beat Marty Lindquist by TKO in the second round less than a year ago. Do you see this fight ending the same way?”

Scott…. ”Yes I do, but its going to be a good fight. I know Marty’s been training and will be in shape, but we expect to knock him out.”

M…. “Do you have anything you would like to add?”

Scott…. “Thanks to Cory and Justin for the chance to show people that I’m not done with this sport. I will have a lot of my fans there as well.”

I would like to thank Scott for letting us get to know him. You can see Scott Robinson vs Gary “Stone Cold” Eyer on the Kolle/Bonsante undercard, March 28 in Hinckley Minnesota at the Hinckley Grand Casino.
