Gary “Stone Cold” Eyer returns!!! With a twist! Tonight, Black Bear Casino, Carlton, MN.

Gary “Stone Cold” Eyer has spent the majority of this last year in service to his country. In his pursuit of life and living outside of the ring, Eyer got a union job and joined the reserves.   It has only been a few months since Stone Cold returned from his Military training and gotten to knock the dust off of his gloves…

Eyer (8,2,1) was set to fight a (2,8) durable journeyman to get back in the swing of things after being away from the ring for over a year at a weight of 135lbs. Boxing happened!! (Cox got injured this past week) Bring in Ronnie Peterson Jr. (3,5) at 144lbs… Below are some questions we asked Stone Cold before his fight took a turn. (from fans perspective, for the better) and below Gary’s comments are some quotes we got from his new opponent, Mr. Peterson.

What does it mean to you to get back into the ring after a year.

Eyer….I like fighting so much it gives me the best chance at having a good future, its something that comes easy to me, I got dreams about becoming a champion at multiple weight classes. I’ve been boxing for almost 12 years now and if I can win I’m one step closer to reaching my goals which means a lot.

Do you feel your military training helps you as a boxer?

Eyer….I’d say yes its made me hungrier/meaner then ever, they want you to stay in shape 365 days a year because PT is a big thing there, so no more blowing up in weight between fights.

What do you expect on the 27th?

Eyer…..A hard fight. I wouldnt want it any other way, it will keep the fans coming back. I’m prob gonna be more nervous this time then other times becasue of the time off. I hope I’m still blessed with a good chin that will help out a lot with winning.

Where do you want to go from here?

Eyer….With a win, I’d like to stay busy. I don’t ever want these 8 to 12 month lay-offs again, they are no good. To become a good fighter you gotta fight all the time. This fight will be at 135, definitely back to 126 and my mind is still set on real low weight. If I gotta pick up mma to fight all the time I might. (Gary will now be fighting Ronnie Peterson Jr. at 144lbs)

Eyer….Thanks for the questions. I’d like to thank Relf Eye Care Specialists because of them I can see across lake superior, I swear I can, and if I choose, see through clothes! They gave me the chance to become a better boxer, I can see things and set things up, not always being a brawler now, which is good for my career.

………. Ronnie Peterson Jr., Eyers new opponent gave us some comments on the fight just made yesterday!

Any last minute words for The League on your fight Eyer?

Peterson….I’m ready… Very nice chance to restart, I’m not backing down from nobody I’ll fight anyone from 130 the 147.

Have you ever had an interest in fighting Eyer?

Peterson….Eyer has popped in my mouth to fight numerous times.

Who gets the edge on the short notice?

Peterson….I think I get the edge I’ll be bigger and stronger, also recently went 8 rounds sparring with Jeremy, the man who beat him last! Eyer is a great man and respect him for serving our country, takes alot to do so… But When fight time comes were both soldiers.

We would like to thank both Eyer and Peterson for taking the time to answer some questions. MNBoxingLeague on Facebook.

Madness, Mayhem, Retirement, and The fight of the year?

Last night belonged to Gary “Stone Cold” Eyer and Levi “The Shark” Cortes. Their clash was definitely fight of the night and to many observers fight of the year. Dan “The Common Man” Cole labeled it fight of the year directly after the action. The heavyweight battle we had been waiting for turned into mayhem in the ring. Confusion rained as the first round came to close and Joey Abell landed a vicious combo to Butlers head after the round had ended, causing an all out brawl in the ring between corner men and others, even spilling into the stands. Just prior to this fight Zach Walters was taken down by a buzz saw in Larry Sharpe, and after it was over Walters and his team informed us he would be retiring from the sport. Below is a quick rundown of last nights action. Laura Zink will have a full report with comments from Larry Sharpe, Gary Eyer, Tony Lee and more.

Saverino Garciavs Jacob Dobbe – (UD 40,36/40,36/39,37 Garcia) – Jacob Dobbe started the fight off with heavy pressure and big shots, stalking Garcia around the ring. The effort Dobbe put into that first round seemed to have drained him for the remaining three. Garcia used superior boxing skill to pick apart Dobbe for the rest of the fight.

William Gillette vs Boris- (TKO 57 seconds of 2nd, Boris) – Gillette won the first round in my opinion and then tasted The Russian Giants power in the second. To some it seemed like a quick stoppage, and to me it seemed that maybe Gillette didn’t let the ref know he was ready to continue after being knocked down two times.

Tony Leevs Hector Orozco – (UD 39,36/40,35/39,36 Lee) – Lee had Orozco down in the first round. He pretty much put on a boxing lesson for 3 rounds of 4. As usual Orozco was very game and continued to come forward for much of the fight. But the 4th round aside, Lee worked every legal portion of Orozco’s body. Very impressive pro debut for Lee. Laura Zink was able to catch up with Lee after the fight and will have his comments with her report later today.

Dave Petersonvs Silas Ortley – (TKO 1:22 of 4thround Dave) – Peterson had Ortley down 3 or 4 times in this fight, all from body blows. At one point Orley had to unload his cookies in the middle of the ring. Ortely started the fight throwing hard but very wide shots, and against a skilled fighter like Peterson it just left his body wide open. This was definitely not a pretty fight, but it was all Peterson in my opinion.

Gary Eyervs Levi Cortes – (UD  58,54/57,55/57,56 Eyer) – Holy Cow! I said this would be the fight of the night, and it really lived up to that billing. Cortes started the first round like a man possessed. His relentless attack on Eyer left many wondering if if Eyer would make it out on his feet. Turns out we have another Minnesota fighter with a steel chin. Levi Cortes unloaded some bombs square on Eyers face but even as some seemed to stun Eyer they did not hinder his fight. Eyer put Cortes on the mat in the 3rd and 5th rounds and that probably was the difference in this fight. While Cortes was always on the attack and landing some bombs, Eyer seemed to land more punches and did a good job of working the body.  I had Gary winning 4 rounds to 2, but according to the judges scores those two knock downs decided the winner. Laura Zink talked with Eyer after the fight and will include that with her report later today.

Ronnie Peterson vs Tomi Archambault- (Ronnie retired on stool after second round on advice of dr, Archambault) – Archambault got his revenge and his W back in this one. To be honest it never seemed like Peterson was in the fight. I was told that the shoulder that Peterson had surgically repaired last year was re injured and on the Dr’s advice Peterson did not come out for the third round.

Zach Walters vs Larry Sharpe - (TKO 57 seconds of 1rst round, Sharpe) – Sharpe told me prior to this fight he had a lot more pop at 170lbs and he showed that in this short fight. The bell rang and he just overwhelmed Walters with huge punches, putting Walters down two times before the fight was called. After the fight we were told that Jungle Boy would be retiring from the sport of boxing. Walters has as much going on outside of boxing and he will now focus on that. We will have more on Zach Walters later in the week. Laura Zink was able to get some comments from Larry Sharpe after the fight and will include in her report later today.

Joey Abell vs Raphael Butler- (Joey DQed for Knocking Butler out after the bell 1rstround) – Has been changed to a No Contest. – The first round had both fighters stunning the other with heavy shots, but the real action came after the bell. It is being reported that Abell and the ref did not hear the closing bell, and Joey Abell threw a huge combo on Butlers head, Knocking him out after the round had finished and Butler was not defending himself. This caused an initial ruling of DQ but later changed to no contest. It also cause something straight out of professional wrestling. Before the dust settled the ring was full with corner men and others in an all out brawl. Some were trying to stop the fighting while some were throwing down. The madness in the ring left one or two fights outside of the ring and in the crowd as supporters for Butler and Abell clashed.

Abell/Butler December 4 at the Target Center, You’re not going to want to miss this one.

Nothing stirs the imagination of fight fans like a heavyweight showdown, this card has two. There are a combined 84 knockouts between the four big fellas entering the ring. On top of  that, there is the return to the Target Center by Minnesota’s light heavyweight champ, Zach “Jungle Boy” Walters, who has 19 KO’s of his own. Judging from the crowds at the last couple shows, you may want to grab your tickets sooner rather than later. Below is the fight card.

targetpostersmallproofJoey “Minnesota Ice” Abell (25,4) vs Raphael “The Silencer” Butler (35,8)- Minnesota’s two best Heavyweights vie for the Title. All but one of Abell’s wins have come by way of knockout and Butler has 28 of his own. You like power, you like KO’s, you’ll love this one.

Zach “Jungle Boy” Walters (24,4) vs Larry “Razor” Sharpe (23,7) – Minnesota’s light heavyweight champ takes on Canada’s Larry Sharpe.

Travis Walker (33,3,1) vs Yevgeniy Shishporenok (6,1)- Another heavyweight bout. Walker has 27 KO’s and Boris “The Russian Giant” has KO’s in 5 of his 6 wins. This should be a fun one.

Ronnie Peterson (3,0) vs Tomi Archambault (0,1) -  This fight has revenge written all over it. When Peterson and Archambault first met October third, Tomi originally was giving the victory even though Ronnie had him down two times in a four round fight. North Dakota’s boxing commission reviewed the tapes and judges score cards and made that one a no contest. You can bet Archambault wants to get that W back and Peterson wants to leave no doubt as to who the better man is.

Gary Eyer (6,0,1) vs Levi Cortes (3,0)- This one just might take the night. Levi Cortes is a tough non stop fighter while Eyer isn’t going to back down from anyone. Look for fireworks and body shots. I really think this could turn into fight of the night.

Dave Peterson (11,0) vs Silas Ortley (4,7) – The Prodigy looks to stay unbeaten.

Saverino Garcia (0,0,1) vs Allante Davis (0,3) – One of these guys will leave with a W on their record.

I also believe Tony Lee is on this card facing  Hector Orozco but this fight is not listed yet.

“Stone Cold” Gary Eyer and Ronnie Peterson will be throwing down in a preview of what they got for December 4 at the Target Center. Eyer will be facing Levi Cortes and Peterson has his rematch with Tomi Archambault on the undercard to Joey Abell vs Raphael Butler.

It has also been rumored that there may be an announcement about Andy “Kaos” Kolle. Plus all the exciting amateur action we have become accustom to at a Horton’s amateur show.

Tony Grygelko of Seconds Out Promotions says……

Tony Grygelko of Seconds Out Promotions just called me to put all the comments under our interview with Willshaun Boxley to rest. He said there is an open invitation for Ronnie Peterson, Antwan Robertson, or Brad Patraw to fight Willshaun Boxley November 20.  He also said they can contact him directly or I can forward any responce to him. Again, I am only the messenger.

Update: for Boxley they would take anybody 130 and down in MNand for Ismail Muwendo they would take anybody from 135 and down. Minus Jason Litzau.

Will we see Boxley vs Hilario? Wow! Ok there is a response in the comments.  As many thought, with Wilton Hilario having a fight on November 13, one week would not be enough time. But he would be interested in such a fight. Cory Rapacz gives a full run down in our comment section.

“The One” Willshaun Boxley, “this being about the 10th fight a guy has backed out on me”

willshaun_2With all the talk about the bantams recently, we thought it was a good time to hear from “The One” Willshaun Boxley. He was to have a fight with Salvador Sanchez this Friday in Vegas but it didn’t work out. It has also been reported that Boxley and Ronnie Peterson are planning to have an interview with Jesse Kelley of MinnesotaBoxing.com to discuss the possibility of a showdown between the two of them if things work out well in their upcoming fights. If that happens, I cant wait to watch the interview. We asked Boxley about these things among others. Below is our conversation with The One.

M…. You were supposed to have a fight this Friday in Vegas against Salvador Sanchez, what happened?

Boxley…. Well, I was told that when we first got the offer he didn’t want to fight me but they couldn’t find another opponent, so they sent me the contract. Me trying to lock the fight in said that I wouldn’t sign unless the promoter signed before he sent it, later after we all just received the info that the guy has pulled out of the fight, I’ve found out that the promoter hasn’t signed the contract at all and that it was the matchmaker who has signed it instead. So yeah there you have it, this being about the 10th fight a guy has backed out on me in less than two years!

M….There has been quite a bit of talk about the Bantams on our site. Many of our readers have you listed as tops in Minnesota. Has your team given any thought to fighting Robertson for the state title?

Boxley…. Of course, but Antwan wouldn’t ever fight me. I got lots of love for him but he’s more of a basketball player than a boxer. I’d pay him more than he’s made on his last two fights but he still wouldn’t except I’d fight him for free he could have my pay. Because once I have the belt just maybe we could have some real  MN turf rival fights for the belt, because we know that I’m the only bantam weight in Minnesota who will except the challenges of all the other bantam weights, not to mention that I am the #1 bantam weight any ways!

M…. Whats going on in regards to Allen Litzau? It looked like the two of you were well on your way to a clash. Is that in the works?

Boxley…. Naw, he’s just another tomato can in the profession of boxing that should have never turned pro. I think he just called me out for publicity, you know he must have been having a hard time getting laid after getting ko’d by Wilton Hilario, not to mention his two losses in MMA.

M…. Ronnie Peterson has been featured on several of our stories recently. He has a big revenge fight this December at the Target Center, if he takes care of business, would you be interested in a fight with him?

Boxley…. No problem, I like this guy if he’s a man of his word, we have recently text and talked on the phone about fighting, but he says the catch is I have to win my next fight, and I have his word for sure! He even contacted Jesse Kelly(MinnesotaBoxing.com) about our conversation, and I confirmed with him as well. This makes me feel that he might keep his word, but we shell see lol.

M…. Since I have mentioned the rest, has your team ever come close to getting in there with Brad Patraw?

Boxley…. I don’t think that guy will ever fight me, he’s worse than them all, I just think that ” Bad” Brad Patraw  is shooting blanks! Congrats to” lil’ Superman” Antwan Robertson in his recent win over him! Brad sucks and should not get a rematch at the title, unless he fights the number one ranked bantam weight Willshaun Boxley. Because he wasn’t going to give Robertson a rematch at first why should Robertson have to give him a rematch at the title when he’s not the number one bantam weight? Honestly, I believe that we have to as a state try to organize our own ranking system so that it’s legit and that champion has to fight the number one ranked guy or be stripped of his state title, because there’s no way you can be a champion just by holding a belt and not excepting fights from the next best in line!

Boxley’s next fight is scheduled for November 20 at the St. Paul Armory.

Ronnie Peterson “even his team thought I won that fight”

I sought out Ronnie Peterson after the press conference held October 27 at the Target Center to discuss his fight with Tomi Archambault. He said for their first fight he weighed in a couple pounds under the fight weight of 130, but it took Archambault a few tries to get down to that weight. Their rematch will also be set at 130 pounds, but Peterson said that will be the last time we see him at 130 or above. “Tomi is the bigger guy, I was tired and sick the night of our fight, but even his team thought I won that fight.” Peterson went on to say “I’m the youngest guy in this weight class, I’m still trying to prove myself. It doesn’t look good when I go against a guy who is (0,1) and don’t get the win.”

As we reported a few days back, that fight has now been ruled a no contest due to some scoring issues. I asked Peterson what he thought about his opportunity to get payback on Minnesota’s largest stage. ” It hasn’t hit me yet, I haven’t been in the gym since that fight. Ive been doing other sports like basketball and football, things I played in high school.” His fight in Minot ND on October 3rd really hit him hard, he said he was still out of it in terms of boxing. In fact, that day after the press conference was the first day back in a boxing gym. Ronnie told me right after the fight he told his dad he was done. “I don’t want to have to explain, I’m done”. Fortunately for us he isn’t done and will be hoping for redemption December 4 on the under card to Abell/Butler.

Before we ended our conversation, Ronnie had this to say, “Everyone was blaming the judges after that last fight, I couldn’t believe I didn’t finish him. I kept thinking I would stop him but just didn’t have the energy to do it.” I have a pretty strong feeling both Peterson and Archambault are going to try and end things without score cards.

Note: Peterson had Archambault down 2 times in their first fight.

It is official, The North Dakota Athletic Commission makes it a no contest.

The commission found that after reviewing the fight between Ronnie Peterson and Tomi Archambault, there were errors made in scoring the bout. All records for the fight held October 3 in Minot ND will show this fight as a no contest. I have gotten correspondence from some of Archambault’s supporters who think that he had won the fight even with having been knocked down twice in  four rounds. I can understand their feeling, but I definitely side with North Dakota’s Athletic Commissioners decision. I just cant get past the two knock downs in a four round fight and how it could be scored any other way than a victory for Ronnie Peterson. Its nice to see that they took care of what seemed to me as an obvious mistake. The beautiful part for both Peterson and Archambault is that they get to settle the score December 4 at the Target Center on the undercard to Abell vs Butler. Ronnie Peterson boxrec

Tomorrow’s Press Conference for Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell vs Raphael Butler

targetpostersmallproofIn attendance will be Minnesota’s best heavyweights past and present. Scott LeDoux and Duane Bobick are scheduled to be there to lend their support for Minnesota’s latest installment of battling big men. Along with superstars past, some of today’s best young talent will be on hand to discuss what is sure to be one of Minnesota’s biggest shows of the year.

Obviously the main attraction is Joey Abell (25,4) and Raphael Bulter (35,8) who will be there to share their thoughts on finally stepping in the ring to oppose each other as pros. If that isn’t enough heavyweight power for you, add Travis Walker (33,3,1) and Boris “The Russian Giant” (6,1). Six heavyweights spanning the last 40 years of boxing in one room, now that’s power.

To add to the already crowded room of fighters, mix in Minnesota’s light heavyweight champ, Zach “Jungle boy” Walters (24,4) along with Dave Peterson (11,0), Ronnie Peterson (3,0), and  Gary Eyer (6,0,1).

We will be there to cover this historic press conference and would like to give you an opportunity to have some of your questions answered. Please either leave a comment with your question or send them through our contact page.

Ronnie Peterson should be (3,0) later this week.

ronnie-peterson

Peterson informed me of the change while I was on my way to Friday’s fights. He said the official change will take place later this week. I know Tomi Archambault’s fans and team didn’t think that should happen. I think the simple fact that Tomi was knocked down two times in a 4 round fight make this the right move. Personally I think this makes Peterson’s fight with Archambault that much more interesting. Stay tune for more on this later in the week.
