Minnesota’s Boxing

boxThank you for your support! Our readership has hit a new high over the last two months. This last week was our best ever! The holiday weekend has been a time to decompress after all the happens of the last couple weeks. We have some exciting changes coming over the next few weeks and months and I just want to thank you for your continued support. Now back to the reason you’re here in the first place, BOXING. Below are some punches in bunches from around the state.

Gary “Stone Cold” Eyer was in great spirits after his second TKO of Scott Robinson. Gary again told me how scared he was going into the ring, but those who were there or have watched the web-cast know Eyer was more scary than scared.

I had an opportunity to talk with “T-Rex” RJ Laase Saturday. He gave credit to Hecotor Orozco for coming to Duluth and taking care of business. RJ is a very smart young boxer and understands the opportunity this gives him to learn from Thursday nights action. I have no doubt the next time we see Laase, he will be better than ever.

Tyler Hultin lived up to the talk. You really could not ask for a better start to a professional career than an early knock out. I was able to chat with Tyler after his fight Thursday night. First off, Tyler, his dad, his fans, were all class. This is another talented and classy fighter from Fergus Falls MN. He was in great spirits after his fight with Craig, he said he was really looking forward to being able to fight in Duluth again.

M…. How did you feel walking to the ring Saturday night?

Kolle….“All I could think was that it was finally here! This was a fight I wanted to happen for a long time and I just wanted the opportunity to erase the last fight from my recent memory. I knew by beating Bonsante definitively I could answer the questions people were asking about me.”

M…. What was Tony’s power like?

Kolle…. “His power was decent, nothing that stunned me or anything but he had enough power that I didn’t want to stand there and take it. He landed a few solid punches in the second round and all I could do was smile to myself, because I knew he didn’t have the power to hurt me!”

M…. There were a number of people around me yelling “throw the left, its open”, I also heard you talking about your corner saying it was real, referring to the left. Could you see it in the ring? Could you tell how open the punch was for you?

Kolle….“Yes, the first round was a feeling out process for both of us in the beginning. In that round I started making a strategy for the fight. When I landed that first punch in the third round and Bonsante waved me forward, that’s when my corner told me that it was real (referring to the fact he was hurt). When he waved me forward, I was unsure, I know I landed a good punch, but he’s a vet and I didn’t know if he was setting me up, so I was a little hesitant. Then Bonsante, being the warrior that he is, pressed the action again and I caught him right on the button on his way in.”

M….You had tagged Bonsante pretty good and he called you forward, as if to say bring it on. You proceeded to knock him to the canvas. Did his calling you forward lead to the amount of power you put on that final left?

Kolle…. “No not really, every punch I throw has my opponents worst intentions in mind. Needless to say, him calling me forward added that much more drama to the knockout!”

M…. “What does being the Minnesota middleweight champ mean to you?

Kolle…. “It means a lot.. This has been something I have sought for a long time. Even though the belt that Chris Holt had wasn’t commissioned, I still wanted it and for whatever reason that fight never came off. To be the legitimate Minnesota Middleweight State Champ means a lot to me.”

M…. You are moving up the ranks with this big victory, aside from fighting at 154, how do you see the rest of this year playing out for you?

Kolle…. “Hopefully it’s a busy year! I know Chuck’s phone has been ringing off the hook for the last week. I would love to get another crack at TV in a fight that I am not such an underdog! But whatever my team decides, I am down with…I just wanna fight!!”

M…. Is there anything you would like to add?

Kolle….“I just want to again thank everybody involved in making this fight successful. Especially my team, who got me more ready then I have ever been. I also want to thank all the fans who made the trip down (up or over) to Hinckley to support all of us fighters. We as fighters do our best to entertain and I hope March 28th is a day that boxing fans will remember for years to come!”
