People are taking notice of this fun card because of all the heavyweight fireworks that should happen. Joey Abell (25,4) vs Raphael Butler (34,8) is sure to please. But the undercard is also loaded with well matched fights that could steal the show. We will be going through some of these match-ups throughout this week leading up to Friday night’s fireworks. We also plan to have some interviews with the contestants of this highly anticipated event. (We had an interview lined up with Zach Walters by Laura Zink, but Walters decided he wanted his actions in the ring to do the talking.) Below is one of the fights that could steal the show.

Gary “Stone Cold” Eyer (6,0,1) is looking to silence some of his critics. While having an undefeated record there are those that have said he has not fought anybody yet. His biggest wins have come against Scott Robinson, he did that in back to back fights. Eyer has not yet faced and opponent with a winning record, this Friday he gets his chance against fellow undeated fighter, Levi Cortes (3,0). For Cortes’s part, he has faced the stiffer of competition in his three fights.
I have had the pleasure of watching most of Eyer’s fights while only catching Levi Cortes’s most recent bout. What I have been told and saw for myself about Cortes, is that he is one tough customer. The time I did see Levi in action, he was non stop in your face and throwing with bad intentions on almost every exchange. After that fight I turned to Laura Zink and told her I cant wait to see this guy again. December 4th I get my wish, and its against another fighter that is must see for me.
Gary Eyer has more slickness to his game than his opponent, but is not afraid to stand in front and pick his guy apart. Eyer has some of the sweetest chopping body shots in the state and I think they will be on full display on Minnesota’s greatest stage. The styles of these two combatants make for sure entertainment in the ring when they square off. Look for Cortes to be on the attack from start to finish while Eyer uses his superior boxing skills to get angles and chop down his attacking foe. This is my pick to be fight of the night, don’t be surprised to see 6 full rounds of action.
Tonight or tomorrow I should be back to do normal moderation. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday.
Gary wont have any problem with this guy. He has only had 7 fights, the doubters are dumb asses.
Sounds like a good fight. I really dont know that much about either guy. Walters isnt willing to promote his own show? That should help ticket sales.
I am thinking it has more to do with recent call outs. But I dont know. Vanda doesnt do too many ints to pump his shows. Dont get me wrong, I wish he had, and I think it would help for those in the cities that dont know a ton about him. But I know Zach to be a great guy, and Im sure he is just trying to stay focused on the 4th.
Vanda is constantly on the radio in the Twin Cities promoting his fights.
Don’t hold your breath for Vanda vs. Walters……I have tried and they haven’t responded to us. Oh well.
I guess I just hadnt seen in print or on line. But come to think of it my family in the cities said they saw quite a bit of Vanda leading up to Nov 13. Maybe team horton is waiting for the 4th to be over.
If they are, that’s fine, but they should at least tell us that. We’re moving on.
Todd is right, why would Team Horton respond to Cory with a big fight on Friday!?
Just a talking point: What’s Walter’s appeal to fight Vanda?
Vanda is a very big draw, and he just beat Williams. At this point, I am just hoping all these MN guys just keep fighting competitive fights. I love all the MN vs MN fights most, but if nobody is willing to work with eachother, I would prefer to see our guys stay busy.
Kato, we weren’t looking for a public response, just a private indication that they were interested. It’s called good management……You’d think they could multitask enough at least give it a look. Guess not.
What’s Walter’s appeal to fight Vanda? Matt is easily the biggest star in this state. Matt would be the best win on Zach’s resume’ for sure. Zach hasn’t had a notable win in 18 months…….
Didnt Chuck say a few months back that he would never work with Bob Stein? That was what that presser was about a couple months back. He liked Vanda minus Stein and MSC I think.
Yep, here it is, http://www.mnboxingleague.com/?p=4276
But things can change in boxing. Nobody has to love eachother to do business. It also stated no Kolle/Truax and I do know they have at least had some talks since then.
This website had plenty to do with the Horton/Bob Stein thing. It doesn’t matter to us though, as we’re always willing to do business with anyone. It harms the fighters to not keep all of their options open at all times. When these fighters trust you to run their careers, they trust that you’re going to make the right decisions for them whether or not your pride gets hurt or not. Whether Horton likes it or not, Ron Lyke isn’t Vanda’s manager.
Sorry guys, I have held your comments on the feud, and I appreciate the kind words, but that fire needs no more feuling, Cory’s will be the last on that subject.
Hey Cory, Vanda’s only “notable” win in how many months has been PHIL WILLIAMS!!! That would not even be considerable by me expect for the MN appeal!!!
Really, Tocker Pudwill wasn’t notable? He’s only a 2 time world title challenger. He did basically shut out an up-and-coming Bonsante. Score it however you want, history will record it as a Vanda win. Me, Mike LeTourneau and Jim Erickson all had it 5-3 Vanda. I’ll take those scores over anyone else’s. No offense though.
Phil Williams is more notable than anything on Zach’s resume’ too. Not to mention Matt moved up in weight to take that challenge head on.
Muller is a common opponent. Zach got a nice stoppage after being down twice…..Vanda scored a virtual shutout at 168 while Muller was 175.
Let’s take a look at their February:
Zach got stopped by Byron Mitchell in Buffalo due to a cut in his mouth, but he was losing on the cards and had been knocked into the ropes (ruled a knockdown) in the round prior.
Vanda went 10 with Duddy and lost a decision on PPV. I think I gave him 3 or 4 of the 10. 4 was probably generous.
Who do you think took the least damage and got paid more?
i know I’m not going to change your opinion, but you’re not as objective as you protray…you give Vanda credit for going the distance with Duddy, but dismiss Zach’s efforts against Mitchell. In defense of your guy you refer to your scores on a fight and in response to Zach’s fight with Mitchell you refer to the “judges” cards….
There is no doubt that Vanda has been paid more…but taking less damage?!!
You can through out all the stats and numbers you get from boxrec, but I still think you’re a putz.
You can think about me what you want, but I know I don’t hide my name behind a moniker. I put myself out there like everyone here should who wants to throw their opinions out. Both times my scores agreed with the judges…..I was just pointing out that some of the “boxing” media called Vanda vs. Pudwill a robbery.
I don’t need boxrec. Every fight I mentioned above I attended or watched live on TV, including Zach’s fight in Buffalo where we sat 5 rows back.
You don’t think Vanda has taken less damage? Zach’s been stopped twice in MN by devastating KOs and was obviously worse for wear against Mitchell. The last time I saw Vanda take real significant damage was against Bonsante.
Matt’s doing fine. He’s made more in boxing in 2009 than all of the Duluth fighters combined. He also has the most momentum behind him right now coming off of his FSN win over Phil. Twist that however you want douche bag…..men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.
big shocker that you have no credability…we all know what you think you are. Maybe for xmas you’ll get that reality check you need.hahah!
I got that last xmas from Ron Peterson. I cam out ok.
I got that last xmas from Ron Peterson. I came out ok. Keep hating, you’re part of the reason I stick with this sport.
glad to be your motivation…you’re part of the reason I follow this site…to be the devils advocate.
I’m hoping Cortez knocks out Eyer.
