The Business of Boxing gets the best of Ronnie Peterson for now.

According to several sources who were in attendance in Minot ND, Ronnie Peterson got a big dose of home town business. Those who I have talked to said they believe there had to be an honest error in scoring of rounds 2 and 3. Peterson had Archambault on the mat in both the 2nd and 3rd rounds but scoring, according to those there, had Archambault winning each of those rounds (10,9). For now it seems the loss will hold until the commission can further review this decision. We are working on getting video of this fight so you can be the judge.

  1. I hate this sort of crap. I dont care if it favors my guy or not, there needs to be standards. Home town judging needs to stop. Could they make a rule that judges need to be from x miles away?

  2. While a very good idea, and one I would support whole hearted, I think it may cost too much on local type cards. I have also thought fights should automaticaly be reviewed by commisions. There are not that many fights in each state that there could not be a review. Just my opinion. Also, there is a thought that it was just scoring mishap. I hope this gets fixed for Ronnie. If not, he has plenty of time to prov himself.

  3. Bob…..I understand your idea, but most places have competent judges. Are you going to tell Denny Nelson that he can’t do a fight at the Target Center because he’s local? It really is up to the state’s commission to make sure the judges that they approve are competent.

Reviewing fights is a useless waste of time unless there is cause…such as an error. Scoring boxing is subjective and that’s the way it has always been. Where would you draw the line in what scores or decisions you change? It would hurt the sport. You can’t change a score because you disagree with someone’s opinion about a round. If that’s the case and your philosophies on boxing scoring are that off then they shouldn’t be approved in the first place. In the case of boxing, it’s really trial and error. This problem starts with the commissions approving their judges and making sure they are properly trained.

I know Ronnie won that fight and I know this sucks. It hurts the promoters over in Minot as well because I would have serious reservations about ever sending a fighter over there and expect them to get a fair shake.

What should Team Peterson do in my opinion? Get the story out there! Get the tape and make sure it finds its way online. Send out press releases with their position accompanied by the tape of the fight. If it’s like I have heard it is then nobody should be able to score it against Ronnie. If they play their cards right, they should potentially be able to turn this experience into a positive for Ronnie and get his name out there and make sure it is known nationally that he was screwed. I hope they do that.

  4. In time there will be review. There has been a steady drum beat for it for a while now. They have just started allowing for it with headbutts. Only makes sence if they want to stay above board. In the case of knock downs and 8 counts I think that would be error. Grounds for review. There are plenty of instances and thoughts on this from people whos points of view far exceeds and seen on this site.

  5. Todd, you have no idea what you’re talking about? You’re comparing replay of headbuts to reviewing scoring of fights? It’s ridiculous. If you’re talking instant replay, then yes….we’ll have that. But reviewing scorecards? No chance.

  6. Scoring of Knock downs and standing 8 counts as seen on the last Roy Jr fight card. The announcers said that ref may never work again, but that doesnt help the fight that happened. Those would be eaily corrected. Thats what I mean.

  7. Also there has been a steady flow from those who do think scoring should be reviewed or posted prior to next round. Plenty about it on line.

  8. Putting a name and face to it isnt really fair. All love the Nelsons and I have not heard of any problems with them. But Minnesota is known nationaly for home cooking. Thats just the way it is. Look at what Texas does, and then on much smaller scale Minot ND. There has to be a way to keep things fair for the fighters. I agree with Todd, that there needs to be some kind of change. Its hard enough on the fighters in the ring, they dont need to be screwed after. Some things could be easily fixed. Todd could you post some of those articles.

  9. If I get some time, I may just do a story on it and refer to them. Until then just search around. There was plenty after the recent TX problems. As for what happened in Minot, all we have is one side. I hope to be getting the video and you guys can be the judge.

  10. bob, fixed is the key word. if they review, the fix is much harder. i need to see the tape of minot before i have an opinion on it. its an old trip to talk about bad judges.

  11. For the record, nobody is claiming a fix here. And like I have said I would need to see the tape before I could give my opinion. I have just gone from a few sources who saw the action in Minot.

  12. I dont have one yet, and I dont know for sure that I will. But if I get it, you can be sure it will be posted.

  13. One of the reasons most sports fans dont take boxing seriously. Ice skating aside, can you name any other sport with so many bad decisions?

  14. Im assuming you mean figure skating. Comparing the two makes anything you say worthless to the league. Kidding, kind of. When judges come in to play in any sport, it lends to problems. Humans are not perfect. But there are ways to make them better. Cory probably has the best short term answer in making sure judges are properly trained, I would also have a grading process.

  15. Thanks it happends to a lot of people it is looking to be changed thanks Todd and Corey for the backup ill keep you tuned. The commision did tell me personally it will be changed and that there was a error infact it should be unanimous in my favor. If tomi has a problem with it will give him another shot. If they dont reverse it ill wait a little to fight brad because he to me would be the better man on paper if they do change it to a win brad is in my sight. thanks again.

  16. First of all Peterson did get a raw deal. Second of all Tomi isn’t from Minot so how could it be considered home-cooking??? If anything it was a just a bad judgement or like it’s been said before an error. In any case I think Peterson did win the fight but don’t call home cooking when the guy that won isn’t fighting in his town…

  17. The information I have gotten on Archambault is that he is in Minot. Again, I was not there, and have yet to see the vid.

  18. Ronnie lost that fight!!!!
Tomi slipped once and Ronnie knocked down Tomi once.
Tomi is not from Minot..he is from South Dakota.
I would love to see a rematch of this fight!!!
