Only a couple days before his scheduled departure for California, “Golden” Caleb Truax was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about Big Bear, IBA Americas Belt, Andy Kolle, and more.

M…. Since you have already been to Big Bear, do you think you will be able to even take more away from this learning experience?
Caleb…. I definitely will be able to take more away from this experience because I know what to expect and hopefully will adapt to the elevation change quicker so I can take more from each workout.
M…. Can you tell us what it is like there?
Caleb…. Well I will be at a different place than I was at last time but I’m sure it will be similar. Beautiful scenery, hills everywhere that make for challenging road work, and 1st rate sparring. I couldn’t ask for much more to get me ready for Oct. 17th
M…. How long to you plan to be in CA?
Caleb…. I will be there for a week (sun to sun) for sure and there is a chance I might stay longer.
M…. Do you know some of the people you will be able to spar and train with?
Caleb…. I know Otis Griffin and Yusaf Mack regularly train at that camp so hopefully I can work with them. I believe there are a few young fighters out there to spar with as well. Also Jeremy and I will head to Wildcard gym twice during the week and get some sparring down there.
M…. Oct 17 you will be fighting for an IBA America’s belt, what does that mean to you?
Caleb…. Its a minor belt but it is still awesome to be able to fight for a belt. It should add some excitement to the card and will help with marketing in the future. I can’t wait to bring it home!
M…. I have to ask, is Andy Kolle still in your sites?
Caleb…. No, his team doesn’t want to fight me so forget em
M…. Kolle aside, are there any Minnesota fights out there that interest you?
Caleb…. Whoever my team decides is next.
M…. Out of all the guys you have trained and worked out with, who would you say works the hardest?
Caleb…. Jon Schmidt, hands down. He’s a nut case when it comes to working out. Its good to have someone like that along side you in the gym because we can always push each other to get better.
M…. What do you think is going to be the biggest help from your trip to CA?
Caleb…. The quality sparring will be beneficial and the altitude training will increase my endurance. Should be a great trip!
M…. Do you have anything else you would like to say?
Caleb…. Oct. 17th St. Paul Armory! come check me out!
so caleb is fighting a guy with a 18-19 record for a belt?
IBA Americas belt. His opponent is better than his record.
“his opponent is better than his record”…that might be the dumbest comment in sports!! Your record defines exactly what kind of career you’ve had. If you lost close fights and fought tough opponents you took bad fights!! You should never take a fight you can’t win!!
I am sorry but I disagree. To me that is the problem in boxing, how do you know how good you are unless tested. This is where people are jumping off of boxing. Even the HBO, Showtime, ESPN, Verses, all heap poo on the bloated record.
Kato, so boxing shouldnt be defined in the same way as other sports? I agree with Todd here.
Isnt boxing a sport?
This is one of the longest running arguements I have with some of my nonboxing friends. For being one of, if not the toughest sport, too often, the sport portion is taken away by a boxers team. Look how many times in history that the best never met. Or who people thought were the best never met. I guess that makes for great discussion but not sport in my opinion. It sort of reminds me of NCAA football bowl system. Most fans want the best to face off, but money keeps the bowls and BCS in place.
I agree with Kato if the boxer is looking for a payday and not worried about becoming the best.
not even the best in the world but the best they can be as a boxer who wants to tell their kids they avoided fighting guys that would challenge them
Kato, you started a fire.
Most of the time, Im the one ducking.
thanks kato you have just answered why chuck wont have zach and andy fight willims and truax
Easy, Those are dead fights and issues. Both sides have said they tried to make things happen. Its dead.
A lot of guys are better than their records indicate…..but that doesn’t make it alright for a guy with a losing record to fight for a title. Isn’t that the issue here?
Thanks for getting things back on track.
im with cory how is that guy fighting for any belt
Belt aside, I think it is a good fight for Truax. This guy should bring Caleb deep into the fight. If I remember correctly, he goes rounds with tough guys.
The point was just that I hate that comment!! Caleb should handle the guy easily. No one with a losing/crappy record should be fighting for a belt. That’s what makes so many of these titles and belts a joke. 612 continues to make no sense with his attempted shots at Kolle and Walters.
Thanks for explaining Kato. I can understand that thought.
It’s part of the natural progression of Caleb’s career. I agree that it’s a good fight for him. Remember, Caleb didn’t have an extensive amateur career and he’s making up for it by being guided properly in the pros.
The Duluth fans weren’t complaining when Zach Walters fought James Morrow….Caleb’s fight is much tougher than that.
612 or Phil’s fans weren’t outraged when Williams went against Isaiah Henderson. Caleb’s fight is much tougher than that.
Joey Abell has consistently fought bums over the last year. His fans don’t seem to mind.
Andy Kolle fought Roland Commings and Brad Thompson in fights 15 and 16 of his career. I believe Dumont Welliver is better than the both of them.
All I’m saying is that this seems to be a great fight for Caleb’s progression and if he is able to pick up the IBA Americas strap with the win then so be it. Don’t fault the promoter for taking the opportunity.
i don’t fault them for taking the fight at all, it’s just as big of a step as most of us would like to see from the guy who is training in Big Bear with some of the elite.
i made my point
