Minnesota’s Boxing

Some rumors and some dates.

Update: Willshawn Boxley has informed me that he will also be fighting on August 29. He will get to have a rematch of his rained out fight with Will Hernandez.

marcus-oliveriaOn the same night that Phil “The Drill” Williams had his marquee victory over Antwun Echols, Marcus Oliveria (pictured on the left) dropped the biggest bombs of the night on Otis Griffin. As far as the regulars of Minnesota boxing cards go, Only Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell hits harder in my book. Oliveria took out Phil Williams when they fought and has kept on with his undefeated ways. He will be showing off his skills August 29, on a Seconds Out Promotions card in WI. The next scheduled pro card (not yet on boxrec.com) is in Rochester MN, on September 12. This card is rumored to have Raphael Butler, in what would be a tune up for his big showdown with Joey Abell in November. I have also heard rumors that Dave Peterson and Corey Rodriguez will also be featured.

In what in my opinion is the most exciting rumor, Andy “Kaos” Kolle and “Golden” Caleb Truax look to be close to a deal to have them fight in October? Only source I have for this is the rumor mill at the most recent fights. Kolle defending his title against the number one contender will always rank highly in my book. And judging from comments and fan interaction it may be the biggest fight out there.

We will keep you up to date on all the major news as it comes in. I will be trying to track down more specifics on the September 12 fight card in Rochester.

  1. I have wondered why more attention has not been given to Marcus. He beat Phil but yet stayed on the undercards. His knock out of Ottis was one of the most impressive I have seen live.

  2. im intersted to see what butler has left. I really like dave P, he is a great guy and slick boxer.

  3. The few times I have had a chance to chat with Dave, he has seemed like a real nice guy. I am interested to see him step up. On the same note, I dont think I have gotten a chance to watch Corey R go. I have heard rumors they may actualy be fighting eachother. If so, that makes the 12th that much better.

  4. I’m not holding my breath for Kolle vs. Truax because of the management teams but I want to point out that I heard that Raphael Butler’s Rochester opponent on the 12th of September is none other than Marcus Rhode…..Yes, the same man that got stopped brutally by Abell and has lost to John Sargent a few times. Wow. Ticekts are going fast I bet!

  5. Marcus Rhode? It is a tune-up. I hope they put some competitive fights on the card as well.

  6. MinnesotaBoxing.com has Rhode listed. I have heard some good fights talked about for this event. Its been a while since Bulter has been in the ring. I think most understand this.

  7. Most understand this? He’s not even fighting a live body. Most understand that Butler’s team has absolutley NO confidence in him that they can even bring in a real opponent. That’s what most understand.

  8. Oh, I’m not defending Abell’s recent opposition either. That’s a joke for another day…..What I’m pointing out is that Butler has NEVER beaten a quality opponent. NEVER!

  9. You do make a damn good point Cory… when looking at butler’s record, it is quite pathetic..
31 wins, only 3 agianst opponents with a winning record, wow
